Weekly Drawing Commemorates Evangel’s 96th Anniversary
By Ron Kopczick | July 2, 2009
In recognition of the Pentecostal Evangel’s 96th anniversary, the winner of the magazine’s July 16 Weekly Drawing will receive two gifts instead of the usual one. A 12-month subscription to the print version of the Evangel along with a copy of Theology in a Nutshell will be awarded to the person selected from online entries submitted starting at 12 a.m. (CDT) this Sunday, July 5, until 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, July 11.
Since last October, the winner of the Weekly Drawing has been accorded either a six-month Evangel print subscription or Theology in a Nutshell, the latest book by PE Editor Ken Horn. The anniversary prize package commemorates the July 19, 1913, birth of the periodical initially known as The Christian Evangel published in Plainfield, Ind. The Evangel’s 5,000th edition will be produced for March 7, 2010.
The Weekly Drawing was introduced on the Evangel’s Web site in March 2006 to thank the magazine’s readers for their loyalty. Through this week’s drawing, there have been 174 winners representing 41 states, one Canadian province, and the countries of Nigeria, the Philippines, and the United Kingdom. The current winner is the first representative from the state of Vermont. Entries for the Weekly Drawing have been received from all 50 of the United States, three U.S. territories, eight Canadian provinces, and 33 nations outside of North America.
To enter the current Weekly Drawing for a copy of Theology in a Nutshell, please visit www.tpe.ag.org by 11:59 p.m. (CDT) on the Fourth of July. Just look for the Weekly Drawing button on the left side of the home page. As mentioned earlier, entries for the special anniversary drawing will be accepted from 12 a.m. on Sunday, July 5, until 11:59 p.m. on the eleventh. There is a limit of one entry per individual or e-mail address per week.

Military Subscription Program Formally Introduced
By Ron Kopczick | June 25, 2009
Although the Today’s Pentecostal Evangel’s military subscription program was announced on the TPE Blog several weeks ago, the campaign will receive its official unveiling in the magazine’s Sunday (June 28) edition. With the Fourth of July just days away, the Evangel’s military subscription offer pays tribute to those who have risked their lives to retain the United States of America’s independence.
The program provides the Evangel at less than half of the regular subscription rate to both current and former members of the U.S. armed forces. A one-year military subscription is $14.49 for 52 issues, while a two-year order (104 issues) is just $28. Military subscriptions can be ordered as either a gift or for oneself. The only requirement is that the recipient’s service branch must be provided when the order is placed.
To join those who have already enlisted themselves or someone they know in the Evangel military subscription program, please call Gospel Publishing House at 1-800-641-4310 and specify code LM or visit the Evangel home page at www.tpe.ag.org to download an order form. As Evangel Editor Ken Horn writes at the end of Sunday’s Vantage Point, a military subscription is an opportunity to bless someone who has served sacrificially.

Reinstated Senior Subscription Rate Offers Great Savings
By Ron Kopczick | June 19, 2009
This week Today’s Pentecostal Evangel reinstated the Senior Citizen subscription program that was discontinued in December 2002. Although the special pricing is available now, an official announcement regarding the re-introduction of the Senior discount won’t be made until the Aug. 9 edition of the Evangel.
The special pricing provides one-year or 52 issues of the Evangel to anyone 60 years or older in the United States for only $18.99, a $10 savings off the standard subscription rate. A two-year subscription providing 104 issues offers an even greater discount for older readers at just $30. That’s $25 less than the normal $55 two-year rate.
An Evangel Senior Citizen subscription can be ordered for oneself or as a gift. The only requirement is the recipient must be at least 60 years of age. To begin an Evangel Senior Citizen subscription, please call GPH Customer Relations at 1-800-641-4310 and mention code LS.
Seniors living anywhere in the world can take advantage of the special subscription pricing to the Evangel. The international Senior Citizen rate is $42 for one year or $84 for two years. If placing an order by phone outside the U.S., please dial 011-1-417-831-8000 to reach Gospel Publishing House.

Evangel’s Appeal and Message Prove to be Timeless
By Ron Kopczick | June 12, 2009
Two weeks after receiving a salvation coupon from a Texas inmate who had recently read a Sept. 30, 2001, copy of the Pentecostal Evangel, the publication was sent a report from a man in West Memphis, Ark., testifying he had committed his life to Jesus Christ with the assistance of the Nov. 19, 2000, issue.
The fact there are those coming to salvation through the ministry of Evangels nearly a decade old doesn’t surprise Pastor Rob Durham of Grand Parkway Church in Porter, Texas, a northern suburb of Houston.
“God’s word tells us it will go out and not return void,” says Durham, whose church provided the Sept. 2001 Evangel that ended up changing a life in a Lubbock correctional facility. “Through the printed page, the Evangel builds faith and gives testimony to what God can do in readers’ lives.”
Since January 1997, more than 22,300 individuals have made Jesus their Savior with the assistance of the Evangel. In 2007 the publication received a record 2,231 salvation reports. That total was surpassed when 2,346 testimonials were submitted last year. Nearly 60 percent of the conversions reported to the Evangel come from the incarcerated.
“We encourage our people to carry the Evangels out of the church and pass them along,” adds the 60-year-old Durham, who has pastored Grand Parkway for 30 years. “The Evangel may have changed over the years, but the message has stayed the same.”

Evangel Assigned New Booth Location at General Council
By Ron Kopczick | June 5, 2009
Due to modifications of the exhibits at the 2009 General Council in Orlando, Fla., the Today’s Pentecostal Evangel booth will now occupy spaces 727-729-731 in North Hall A2-B of the Orange County Convention Center. The minor relocation will not affect any of the activities planned for the Evangel booth, including the nine book-signing sessions which are scheduled from Aug. 4-7, the four days the exhibit hall is open.
The first 30 guests at each signing will receive complimentary copies of the featured author’s book. Writer and speaker Alicia Britt Chole will sign her book, Finding an Unseen God, during the initial session at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4. Change: Count on It will be signed by missionary broadcaster Bill McDonald at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 5. Later Wednesday, at 1:30 p.m., Chole will return to sign her Anonymous: Jesus’ Hidden Years … and Yours study guide and journal.
There are three author sessions scheduled for both Thursday, Aug. 6, and Friday, Aug. 7. Thursday’s line-up includes Berkeley, Calif., church planter Earl Creps signing Reverse Mentoring at 11 a.m. and Assemblies of God Men’s Ministries Director Tom Greene giving away The Game Isn’t Over at 1:30 p.m. Thursday’s final session will be at 4 p.m. and feature Stanley M. Horton: Shaper of Pentecostal Theology signed by author Lois Olena and Dr. Horton.
Friday’s three signings will feature: AGUSM Chaplaincy Military/Veteran Representative Scott McChrystal and Daily Strength For the Battle at 11 a.m.; Senior Pastor Warren D. Bullock of Northwest Family Church in Auburn, Wash., signing When the Spirit Speaks at 2 p.m. ; and Evangel Editor Ken Horn with Theology In a Nutshell at 3 p.m.
Besides the book signings, visitors to the Evangel booth will receive free copies of the magazine, a chance to win a one-year complimentary subscription to the publication, and can take advantage of discounts for bulk orders placed on either the Oct. 11 Kids Edition or Jan. 31, 2010, Super Bowl outreach edition. Any pastor, meanwhile, can begin or increase their church’s bundle subscription with 25 complimentary copies of the Evangel per week for a three-month quarter or 25 gift copies of the Spanish Evangel per quarter for six months.

Inmate Makes Salvation Decision With Aid of 2001 Evangel
By Ron Kopczick | May 29, 2009
A Texas inmate picks up a copy of the Pentecostal Evangel and after reading the magazine decides to commit his life to Jesus Christ. It happens several times every day in correctional institutions throughout the United States. But this particular instance is far from typical.
The prisoner is incarcerated in Lubbock, nearly 600 miles from the church that provided the Evangel. And the magazine itself is nearly 8 years old. How the Sept. 30, 2001, edition of the Evangel made its way from Grand Parkway Church in Porter, a small community just north of Houston, to the plains of western Texas is anyone’s guess. What’s clear, however, is the power of the printed page. Especially when it has a divine appointment.
Since 2004, approximately 6,100 other men and women serving time have reported making Jesus their Savior with the assistance of the Evangel. Thousands more have drawn inspiration from the publication to remain steady in the Christian faith while finishing their sentences. It’s unknown where these members of America’s forgotten society would be spiritually if it weren’t for the caring churches and individuals who provide a witness and encouragement via the Evangel.
During the past 13-plus years, more than 7.9 million Evangels have been provided to jails and prisons through the Key Bearers program. Millions of additional magazines have been supplied directly to local correctional facilities by neighboring congregations. All in all, the distribution ministry has proven to be powerful and life-changing.
Every dollar donated to Key Bearers provides four copies of the Evangel and a copy is usually read by several inmates. To learn more or become a part of this outreach, visit the Evangel home page at www.tpe.ag.org and click on the Key Bearers icon.

Horton and Lois Olena (Aug. 6), Scott McChrystal (Aug. 7), Warren Bullock (Aug. 7), and Evangel Editor Ken Horn (Aug. 7), who will sign copies of Theology in a Nutshell.
Free copies of the author’s book will be given to the first 30 guests at each of the signings. Dr. Horton, who took part in the original book signings 12 years ago, will greet those receiving complimentary copies of his biography, Stanley M. Horton: Shaper of Pentecostal Theology, written by Dr. Olena.
Further details of the Evangel book signings shall be provided in the weeks leading up to General Council. In addition, full page advertisements appearing in The Council Today newspaper will also list complete information regarding the sessions.
